Are both these sentences correct:

1-What I did wasn't illegal, like when John stole money from his employer.
2-What I did wasn't illegal, as when John stole money from his employer.

Yes, Navi. No. 1 is more conversational and No. 2 is more formal.

If you go up to "Find" above your posting, click on it and type in like vs. as, you'll find some very interesting discussions in previous threads on this very topic.
