Hello, Rachel and Richard:

Would you use:

1. This is the first time I am participating in such ...

2. This is the first time I have participated in such ...

while the event is taking place?

Thanks.

I guess that if the event is still taking place, it would be more appropriate to say no. 1, Jerry.

No. 2 gives the impression that the event has just concluded.

I agree with Richard.

Perhaps with "I'm participating" you are actually in the middle of participating, and with "I've participated," you may be there at the event but not actively participating yet.

Hello:

While I agree with you, how can one then explain the following stats:

6 on "This is the first time I'm doing"
http://books.google.com/books?q=%22This+is+the+first+ti...22&btnG=Search+Books

199 on "This is the first time I've done"
http://books.google.com/books?q=%22This+is+the+first+ti...22&btnG=Search+Books

Confused:-)

Thanks.

Jerry, Jerry, Jerry . . .

Your "stats" have nothing to do with how one interprets a grammatical form. Please don't be confused. Wink
