When I was watching CNN, the following sentence
appered on the screen:

Shoot down tomorrow?

I think they were talking about the launch of a space shuttle since there was a picture of a shuttle.

My q:

The verb [shoot down] means: to make an enemy plane crash to the ground, by firing weapons at it.

How come they are going to shoot down a space shuttle?

You've got the right definition for shoot down, but the wrong target! Smile

There's a satellite orbiting around the planet that's going to break into many large parts, which will be falling back to Earth and may be a serious danger to people and animals. They're planning to shoot the satellite and perhaps break it into smithereens that won't be so dangerous if and when they fall to Earth.
