1)A prosecutor charged John:kidnapping, extortion,and assault and battery.

2)A prosecutor charged John in kidnapping.

Did I use 'charged' correctly?

Yes and no. You've chosen the right verb, but I need to do some tweaking:

1)A prosecutor charged John with kidnapping,...

2)Same problem here.
