Hello..

  • My favorite is cherries.
  • My favorite fruit are cherries.

    Which of the above is correct? I know that fruit is an uncount noun hence the singular verb. Is the second sentence incorrect? If not then when does one use it?

    The verb agrees with the subject, which is singular here, even though the predicate nominative is plural:

    My favorite fruit is cherries.

    Here's another example, from Google:

    is figs. They are sweet. They are in the fruit group. Back To Index. ...

    If the predicate nominative became the subject, the sentence would be:

    Cherries are my favorite fruit.
