Do "earn" and "well" collocate? Can I say

She earns well. (= She makes good money)

?

If yes, why is C wrong in the question below?

Over this period, according to a report recently issued by the Hispanic Studies Center in Los Angeles, Mexicans received 14.5 biIIon US doIIars from relatives working in the United States, which is almost __________ Mexico earned from foreign oil sales.

A) as
B) just as
C) as well as
D) as much as
E) as far as

The reason that D is the correct choice in this case is that as much as refers to a comparison with the amount of money in question, 14.5 billion dollars.

Even though it's not a commonly used collocation, she earns well is possible. It would be much more common to hear something like She's a good earner or She makes a good living.

At any rate, C doesn't work because it's not the proper comparison with the amount of money in question.
