Today I walked as ---- as the river and it was not necessary to walk any ---- than that.

A) far / farther
B) long / longer
C) well / better
D) much / more
E) wide / wider

A is correct, but what makes C or B wrong? Can't we use "much" or "more" for distance? Thanks.

This sentence deals with distance, Curious. The reason that A is correct is that these words deal with distance.

We don't normally use much or more when referring to distance. Yes, theoretically I could ask you, "How much did you walk today?" but it doesn't sound natural. I'm much more likely to ask you, "How far did you walk today?" if I'm thinking about distance, or "How long did you walk today?" if I'm thinking about how much time you put into that activity.

I didn't realize ---- it would take me to get there on foot.

A) so far
B) how much
C) how far
D) so long
E) how long

and how much does not work here, either? Do we have to use the word "time" to be able to use how much? That is,

How much time would it take me to walk there? (= How long would it take me...?)

but not "How much would it take me ...?"

Right?

That's correct, my friend. Let me say, though, that even though we understand How much time? it's not what we'd normally say, which is How long?
