Dear teachers,

Please advise me what "it" indicates in the following sentence.
Thank you.

I hate it when I take that last sip of coffee before running out the door for work.

"It" is the unreal object of the verb hate . The rest of the sentence is the real object (taking that last sip of coffee ...).

See that use of "it" from LDOCE 5.

used as the subject or object of a verb when the real subject or object is later in the sentence.
