Hello,

"Get up" means to stand up from a sitting or reclining position. "Wake up" means to awake from sleep.
It is possible to wake up at, say, 7:30 a.m. and not get up until 10:00 a.m. for example. _______ Examples of "get up": "¢ Aunt Ella fell down and couldn't get up. "¢ They get up at 6:30 every morning and stumble into the kitchen, still asleep until they have their coffee. "¢ Hello, Darcy. Yes, I'm sick today. I'm not going to work. In fact, I'm going to stay here in bed all day. I'm not going to get up even to get a drink of water. Examples of "wake up": "¢ We have a new baby. She's only three weeks old. She wakes up crying several times a night. (Of course, since we are her parents, we have to get up to take care of her.) "¢ Did the storm wake you up last night? "¢ Sam is a light sleeper. He wakes up easily, whenever there is the slightest noise. However, he doesn't get out of bed. Often he reaches for his book on the night table and doesn't go back to sleep for the rest of the night. Sometimes you can say either "get up" or "wake up"; either one is logical: "¢ Good night! I have to leave now. I have to get up/ wake up very early tomorrow. Rachel |
