What are the differences between the sentences above and the original one? Why are different rules applied?

It seems to me both sentences have the same structure: 'way' is followed by 'that- clause'. But 'a' is not acceptable while 'b' is. What are the differences between the two sentences? Did I make myself clear?
Mea culpa, Kis. In replying to your original posting, I guess I was thinking more about which choices I felt most comfortable with rather than which are technically okay, and I should really have included a. Sorry about that.
The only difference between a and b is that that has been ellipted in a, which can be done, of course. Choice a is probably more common in conversation than in written form.
