Which response is correct:
Is this your friend?
1.Yes, this is.
2.Yes, it is.
3.Yes, he is.
4.Yes, she is.

The correct response is "Yes, it is."

The subject of a short answer can be only a subject pronoun, and the subject pronoun refers to the subject of the question. (Subject pronouns are: I, you, he, she, it, we, they.)

In this case, the subject is "this" – "Is this your friend?" Questions with "this" are answered with "it."

If the question named the person, the response would be "he" or "she":

A: Is Helen your friend?
B: Yes, she is.

A: Is James your friend?
B: Yes, he is.
