The correct response is "Yes, it is."
The subject of a short answer can be only a subject pronoun, and the subject pronoun refers to the subject of the question. (Subject pronouns are: I, you, he, she, it, we, they.) In this case, the subject is "this" – "Is this your friend?" Questions with "this" are answered with "it." _______ If the question named the person, the response would be "he" or "she": A: Is Helen your friend? B: Yes, she is. A: Is James your friend?
