Can I say,

(A) A salesgitl pressed the alarm when / as the robbers were trying to get away.

(b) As / when they sat at the counter to choose bracelets, there were some men pacing up and down outside the shop.

They're both fine, Vincent.

As may work a little better in both cases, though, since it means more of "at that same moment" than when does.
