Thank you so much, Gustavo and David!  I see that this kind of ellipsis should not be used by learners.  I as a non-native English speaker find it difficult to tell sentences with the ellipsis are graceful (like Steinbeck's) or less acceptable (like (2), (3), and (4) above).
