Hi, GBLSU—We say that people suffer from diseases, not that they suffer diseases. So (1) doesn't work.

Sentence (2) doesn't work, either. Although you can say that the patients suffered from cholera, you need a conjunction before the second verb phrase:

(2a) These patients [suffered from cholera] and [died because they hadn't received the proper treatment].

I see. <suffer from> can not be passive. Thanks a lot.
