I agree with David on all counts. I usually tell my students that "try" + infinitive is preferred when some effort is involved (actually, some effort might arise from trying to open a lock with an object that is not originally intended for that purpose, as is the case with a knife or a screwdriver), while "try" + gerund is used when it carries the meaning of experimenting, as conveyed by David's paraphrasis:

  • If you can't find the key, see if you can open the lock with something like a knife or a screwdriver.
