Hi,  I understand that "while" indicates that multiple things are going on at the same time.  Would putting a comma before it indicate contrast?

(1) "When the parties split up, Subject Child David went with the mother to the state of FL, while Subject Child Lisa remained with the father in NYS."

Yes, Jacob B., that's right. "While" there is equivalent in meaning to "whereas."
