I understand the underlined part could be paraphrased into;
[The other group = the antecedent] was genetically manipulated to be intellectually inferior, which was also done by modifying the gene for the glutamate receptor = non-identifying relative clause].
I’ll appreciate, if you kindly advise me with a better idea to parse the part above.
