Below the intention is not for "since" and "media" to be read as being connected. I wonder what exactly prevents such a reading, though. And I wonder whether common sense alone is the only safeguard against such a reading.

I'd feel more comfortable with "media" being used in the plural.
I do understand that there hasn't been any coverage from those media because you are criticizing the powerful interests that they stand up to.
