Hello,

I am wondering whether omitting the object in the following verb pattern would be considered wrong  (grammatically speaking). Or it depends on the verb itself.

[Verb +Objet+ to + infinitive]

Examples:

A1. The officers ordered their men to attack the building.

A2. The officers ordered to attack the building

B1. I warned him not to go there after dark.

B2. I warned not to go there after dark.

Hi, Meriem,

It depends on the verb.

The verbs "order" and "warn" require an object. Alternatively, you can use a noun:

@Meriem posted:

A1. The officers ordered their men to attack the building.

B1. I warned him not to go there after dark.

A3. The officers gave the order to attack the building.
A4. The officers ordered an attack on the building.

B3. I issued a warning not to go there after dark.
With "warn," you can also use this structure: B4. I warned against going there after dark.
