Cristi, "encompass" means "include" (the whole encompasses or includes parts), and can be used in the passive form to say that certain components are included in the whole.
"comprise" can mean "contain" (from LDOCE: The house comprises two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a living room) or "compose," in which case it provides another perspective of the same relationship (the parts compose the whole) and is often used in the passive with of(from LDOCE: The organization is comprised of four parts), although some say "be comprised of" is wrong and "be composed of" should be used instead.
