Enquiry
Concerning the answer of the following question, could I add my point of view?
The question:
-........until the car had been checked before you returned home?
a) Did you wait
b) Had you waited
🔵I appreciate your efforts.I respect the site greatly.I think it is not natural to start a part of conservation with past perfect.I know that past perfect makes a connotation between the clauses, but I think
🔵."Did you wait.." is OK here
The speaker is inquiring, starting a conversation.
🔴Past perfect is when we focus on the sequence, moreover it would be confusing if we chose past perfect as we wouldn't know which one of them started first, 'checking or waiting.'This my humble point of view.

Why didn't you put your comment in the original thread?

Also, notice that there should be a space after 'full stops'.

Hello, Mohamed Awad said—Assuming follow-up questions or comments relate to the primary topic of a given discussion thread (i.e., assuming they are not tangential), such questions or comments should be posted in the thread itself.

Since your follow-up comments here are related to the primary topic of the discussion thread that you have taken a photograph of and posted here, you ought to have posted your comments in the other thread.

Regarding your comments, you have made a crucial assumption, that the sentence comes at the beginning of a conversation. What makes you think it does? There is no conversation. There is no context whatsoever.

The fact is that "Did you wait until the car had been checked in before you returned home?" can be used if one is talking to someone who has just returned home or who returned home at some point in the past.

However, in the latter case, where the person returned home at some point in the past, the other sentence ("Had you waited until the car had been checked in before you returned home?") is also grammatically correct and natural.

Since there is no context, Egyptian students will answer correctly either way.
