Should/could this sentence be re-worked to be grammatically correct?

His high level of commitment to performance driving means he is always active and travels a lot to various national events.

I see nothing grammatically wrong with your sentence. Perhaps it could be improved to:

His high level of commitment to performance driving means he is always active and has to attend a lot of national events. 

or

- His high level of commitment to performance driving means he always has to be active as well as attend a lot of national events.
