Choose: Sue has just told Ann that they ........ to their friend’s wedding tonight.
(would go - have gone - were going - are going)
I think that “would go” and “are going” are both correct, right?
Hello, Ahmed Imam Attia—The present perfect does not take backshift. The only answer choice that makes sense is "are going": "Sue has just told Ann that they are going to their friend's wedding tonight."
Because backshift is not involved, "would go" could only be used if there were conditional meaning—e.g.: "Sue has just told Ann that they would go to their friend's wedding tonight if she found an appropriate dress to wear."
