Does 'hometown' refer to the the place you were born or your current permanent home?

Hi, Ashraful—"Hometown" can have either of those meanings. Here is the first definition provided by the Oxford English Dictionary (OED):

The town of one's birth, early life, or permanent residence. Also: the town of one's relatives or ancestors.

I was asked about my hometown on my practice IELTS test. Does this mean that I can talk about either where I was born or where I currently reside?

1) But what if the place where I live is just a rented place and I don't own it? I don't think it's possible to call it my hometown, is it?

2) What if I have homes in more than one country? Can I call either my hometown or just where I'm originally from?
