Any verb can take a modal. Actually, some verbs of mental process take "not" even though negation refers to the verb in the content clause:

- I don't think the smartphone will increase in size in future ⇒ In my opinion, the smartphone won't increase in size in future.

In:

@Bel Zan posted:

"I might think the smartphone will increase in size in the future, but I'm not sure of that."

the person is doubtful about the opinion being expressed, while in:

@Bel Zan posted:

"I think smartphones might increase in size in the future"?

the person is doubtful about the event being referred to.
