Hi there,

Can you please tell me if all my exchanges in Indirect/Reported Speech are correct. Also, I would appreciate it if you could tell me other verbs that I can use apart from said & told.

Fahmi: "I have taken my medicine."
Lyana: He said that he had taken his medicine.

Fei Yen: "My father has just gone out to meet his friends."
Velan: She said that her father had just gone out to meet his friends.

Kang-Dae: "I have travelled all over the world."
Dayang: Kang Dae said that he had travelled all over the world.

Nur: "My grandmother has won the marathon."
Bradley: Nur told me that her grandmother had won the marathon.

All comments welcome.

Thank you very much for your time.

Dear Gilbert,

You have correctly turned all the sentences into reported or indirect speech.

Depending on the context and on the type of sentence (whether it is a statement, a question, or a command), you can use different reporting verbs which will make your reported sentences more effective and less repetitive. Note, however, that reporting verbs other than "say" or "tell" will add extra meaning to the sentence.

For example:
Direct Speech: "Follow me."
Reported Speech: He asked me to follow him / He urged me to follow him / He ordered me to follow him / He invited me to follow him (according to the reporting verb used, each reported sentence expresses something different about the way in which he addressed me and also about the content of what was said).

Now, going back to your sentences, you could use reporting verbs like "inform," "assure," "assert," "insist," "explain," "confirm," "remark," "comment," "boast." For example:

Fahmi: "I have taken my medicine."
Lyana: He insisted that he had taken his medicine (Context: Fahmi's doctors or Fahmi's family doubted that he was taking his medicine.)

Fei Yen: "My father has just gone out to meet his friends."
Velan: She explained that her father had just gone out to meet his friends. (Context: Somebody wanted to speak with her father.)

Kang-Dae: "I have travelled all over the world."
Dayang: Kang Dae boasted that he had travelled all over the world.

Nur: "My grandmother has won the marathon."
Bradley: Nur informed me that her grandmother had won the marathon.
