I like the word "therefore" here (see bold). But I suppose that it's redundant with "so".
This is how great powers tend to look at things—it’s suddenly an existential threat to their security if their prestige is threatened, so invasion is therefore seen as a reasonable response.
And let me provide another example. I like "anyway" below, but isn't it redundant with what's flanked within the em-dashes?
