Hello,

  1. Neither the students nor the teacher was in the room.(was is correct)
  2. Neither the teacher nor the students were in the room. (were is correct)
  3. Neither boys were (was) in the room.( either were or was is correct)
  4. Neither of the boys were (was) in the room.
  5. Neither boy(s) were( was) in the room.

My questions:

  1. Are my comments in the brackets  correct?
  2. In sentence 4, should "boys" be "boy" and what about the verb? Singular or plural?
  3. What about sentence 5?

I see that 1, 2 and 4 are grammatically correct. Concerning 3 & 5, 'neither' is used alone, i.e. without 'of', so it should be followed by a singular noun, not a plural one.

- Neither boy was in the room.
