Hello,

Is the following reasoning grammatically correct?

'You wouldn't have guessed that her father is Chinese.' = 'Even if you tried, you wouldn't have guessed that her father is Chinese.'

Thank you.

Almost correct. The main verb, wouldn't have guessed, suggests that the implied conditional is a past hypothetical. This would be

If you had tried,....

Of course in informal English, past hypotheticals are often expressed with the simple past, so the sentence suggested by Ricky would be heard in informal conversation.

The original sentence does not have "even," and therefore the full form of the sentence, with the conditional expressed, would not have "even." It would be

If you had tried, you wouldn't have guessed that her father is Chinese
