Population

Hello, Menem,

"population" is usually singular, so the correct answer is:

  • The population of Egypt is increasing rapidly.

Curiously, the number (singular or plural) can vary if some percentage or proportion is used. The plural will be used if stress is laid on the different individuals that form that percentage, and the singular will be used if such individuals are considered as a group. The examples below have been taken from the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English:

- Sixty percent of the world's population live in areas that are at risk from sea-level rises.

A quarter of the prison population is under 21.
