The adjectives formed by a verb + -able or -ible generally imply the capacity of being V-ed, for example: visible (that can be seen), attributable (that can be attributed), comparable (that can be compared), etc.

We can say that preferable means potentially preferred, while preferred will be used for something or somebody that is actually preferred.

It would be great if you could provide sample sentences to check whether preferable or preferred works better in the context in which you want to use it.
