Thanks Ahmed, I agree with you and I have known these answers for long, but what has made me doubt is that I have seen the following sentences:

1-"He said he would/will visit the park tomorrow." Both will and would are OK

2-"A: What is your name? B: Pardon me? A: I asked what your name was/is." Both is and was are OK.

At last, what about this sentence: "He said he.......live in London in 2023."

a-will      b-would

Yes, both are OK. Suppose today is Thursday. On Thursday morning, he says, "I will visit the park tomorrow." At any time later on the same day, somebody may report these words saying either:

1. He said that he will visit the park tomorrow. (Tomorrow hasn't come yet.)

2. He said that he would visit the park tomorrow. ('Said' is in the past and the speaker's actual words were said earlier to the time of reporting.)

Yes, both are grammatically acceptable.

a-will      b-would

Again, if I had to choose between them, I'd go with 'will'. However, both are possible. The past tense of 'Asked' in 2 and 'said' in 3 is the reason that 'was' and 'would' are correct answers.

Thanks Ahmed, does that mean that as long as the verb is in the past, we backshift the verb even if the situation is true or still exists?

'Time backshift' is optional in this case.

For example, "He said that Cairo...... the capital of Egypt."

a- is       b- was    c- both a and b

C. Both are correct. However. if you had to choose between 'a' and 'b', 'a' would be the model answer in our exams.
