Hello admin!

I have a question here. There are two sentences:

- Sugar and water are two essential things for ill people.

- Sugar and water is two essential things for ill people.

Can you tell which sentence is correct please? I'm still confused because "water" and "sugar" are uncountable nouns but I refer two things at the same time so whether I should use "are" or "is" here.
