suffering humanity

Dear teachers,

That both Freud and Max were motivated primarily by compassionate concern for suffering humanity is elaborated upon in Fromm's biology.

Please tell me if "suffering humanity" is a noun phrase or 'suffering' is a gerund and 'humanity' is its object.

Thank you.

Hello, Coco,

"Suffering humanity" works like "suffering people" or "a suffering person."

The participle "suffering" is functioning adjectivally.

"A suffering person," for example, means "a person who is/was suffering."
