Yes, it is. In this case, it is quite clear that the future incident 'destroying the toys' hasn't happened yet. It is something that will happen in the future. You can also use 'would destroy' to go with the past tense 'heard'.

1.  He heard that a dark character would destroy all the toys.

2. He has heard that a dark character will destroy all the toys.

3. He heard that a dark character will destroy all the toys.

All of them are grammatically correct. The second one sounds natural in real life.
