Hi, Egyptian2017 and Ahmed—I agree with Ahmed that "worked" (the simple past) works and would like to add that "has worked" (the present perfect) also does:

  • My uncle worked as a sales manager for twenty years, but now he has his own business.
  • My uncle has worked as a sales manager for twenty years, but now he has his own business.

The present perfect conveys that the speaker's uncle's twenty-year period of being a sales manager has just recently ended, and that the period of his having his own business has just begun.
