1) He didn't know I had read three of his articles. 2) He didn't know I had read some of his articles. 3) He didn't know I had read certain of his articles. All of these could mean: a) I had read three/some/certain of his articles and he didn't know that. but could they mean: b) There were three/some/certain of his articles that he didn't know I had read.
